Canvas "Free-for-Teachers" & Course Migration

If an instructor wishes to begin working on their Canvas course, but has not yet been provided with their RiderKEY credentials with access to Rider's Canvas, they can instead create a "Free-for-Teachers" account.  Any individual user can get access to the public version of Canvas at no cost.

This can be a valuable resource when an adjunct instructor wishes to begin designing their Canvas site, however has not yet been issued their Rider University credentials.  Content created within Free-for-Teachers can be easily migrated into their Rider Canvas course.

Step 1: Create Free-for-Teachers account

Any individual can create a Canvas account at no cost by navigating to canvas.instructure.com.  Once there, follow the prompts to create a new account as a Teacher.  You will then be redirected to form to complete as shown below.

Follow any additional instructions to create your account.  You may be required to confirm your email address prior to continuing.  If you already have a Free-for-Teachers account, you can skip this step.

Step 2: Create your Content

You can use Canvas to upload course files, create assignments, and send announcements to students.  To get started using Canvas, check out the Canvas Getting Started Guide for Instructors.

Step 3: Export Free-for-Teachers Course

Once issued your RiderKEY credentials, you should then be able to login to Rider's instance of Canvas.  Confirm your class is now listed on your Dashboard.  If you still do not see your course listed, contact your Dean's office to confirm the course has been assigned to you in Banner.  To export the course materials from your Free-for-Teachers account, complete the following steps:

  1. Select your course in the Free-for-Teachers account you wish to export
  2. Click on Settings on the left-hand side of the navigation pane
  3. Select Export Course Content link on the right-hand side of the page (Note- if you are on a smaller screen, this link may be towards the bottom of the page)
  4. Click on the red Create Export button.  This process may take up to 2-5 minutes depending on the size of the course.
  5. When your download is ready, click on the blue New Export link to download your file.

Step 4: Import Course into Rider Canvas

Once you have access to the course in your Rider Canvas account, you will then be able to import your course export package from Step 3.  For this process, you should login to Rider's instance of Canvas (rather than Free-for-Teachers).  The Rider login screen looks similar to below:
