Providing Extended Time in Canvas for Student(s)

Tags canvas quiz

Overview

Using the Moderate Quiz option in Canvas, instructors can provide additional time on a Canvas Quiz (or exam) for specific student(s).  This functionally is frequently utilized when a student has an academic accommodation.

How-To

  1. Click the Quizzes [1] link from the left-hand side navigation pane
    Select "Quizzes"

  2. Open the specific quiz you wish to change [2]
    Choose quiz

  3. Click the Moderate This Quiz [3] link located on the right side of the screen
Select moderate this quiz in the top right hand corner

  4. Click the Pencil Icon [4] located to the right of the student requiring extra time
Moderate this quiz is on the right hand side of the page, or at the bottom of the page if on a small screen

  5. Enter the amount of extra time [5] allowed.  For example: if the student requires 90 minutes, and the current time limit is 60 minutes, you would enter 30 minutes.

  6. Click Save [6]

Additional Considerations

  • Ensure the window of time the exam is available is sufficient to allow the extra time for the student.
  • For example, if the exam is 60 minutes for most students and 1 needs an extra 30 minutes, you must ensure the exam is open for at least 90 minutes
  • This process must be completed for each Canvas Quiz.  So, if a student has an academic accommodation for the entire semester, this process must be replicated each time.
